In this episode…

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, many employees have been left unemployed and without a source of income. There are now scores of people on the job market looking for employment; to top it all off, the competition for whatever’s available is tough. Additionally, unlike the situation a couple of months ago where we had a “seller’s market” and candidates had more power, things have now changed. There are many talented people out in the job market and the time it takes to find the right candidate is now shorter.

Hiring the wrong candidate can be a costly undertaking. Recruiters and hiring managers still need to consider talent and how culturally fit a candidate is before offering them a position in their companies.

In this episode of Elevate Hire, Greg Toroosian interviews Stuart Posin, the Chief Technology Officer at XCLAIM, about how to build talented and culturally fit teams in both startups and growing companies. They also talk about the differences between being an internal versus external technology advisor, the effects of COVID-19 on the recruitment process, and how employees can be their authentic selves while at work. Stay tuned.

It’s a good day.

Greg Toroosian 1:34

Yeah. Yeah. Which is rare, which is rare. So normally, I like to hand over to the guests to share more information about themselves and their background and how they got into their current position, which would you It seems very, very interesting. So I’d love to hear more about that if you’re willing to share.

Stuart Posin 1:48

Absolutely. I’ll start with a bit about my background, and then we’ll get into how I became involved with XCLAIM. I spent most of my career so far in education, working at several different things. Dependent schools in the Los Angeles area myself have gone to an independent school, all in technology both on the IT side and in the application software development side. I did that for 15 something years. And at some point in my career, I started a couple different not for profit organizations, one called One Schoolhouse, and the other ATLIS, the Association of Technology Leaders and Independent Schools. And having started to not for profits that were successful, I decided, you know, I had this entrepreneurial thing going on in my head and decided I needed to figure out what the startup world was all about. And so, I still remain involved in education, both through Atlas and I’m the board chair at a high school in Burbank called Providence High School. But my day job now really is involved in startups. I first went to a startup Where we were trying to build parental control applications for Mac, iOS and Android. Unfortunately for us, Apple and Google up their game and sort of put us under. I then went to a luxury beauty company called Violet Gray. It was an amazing experience for great people. And now I find myself at XCLAIM. So I got to XCLAIM. My wife is a bankruptcy attorney insolvency for a large law firm and I was going to New Orleans for a weekend trip with a claims agent company. And I was headed to Raleigh, North Carolina for a board meeting on Sunday, and she was headed out on Saturday and she said, Why don’t you come with me to New Orleans?” And so I find myself in New Orleans at a dinner Saturday night and meet the founder and CEO of XCLAIM at dinner in New Orleans. He here you know very close, but somehow across the United States, we met each other at dinner, I met two startups, he had an idea. And you know, we sort of connected at dinner. And then when we got back to LA just had coffee a few times, I became an advisor, ever built software, I’ve built software. And so I learned what expertise I could have as an advisor. And then he finally convinced me to come up full time as CTO back in February.
